If it’s possible, there’s more to Tuscany that medieval towns, vineyards, olive groves and rolling hills… There are also dramatic caves, sculpted by nature over millions of years. The Grotta del Vento offers one of the most comprehensive underground experiences in Europe.

This complex of underground caverns remained unexplored until the 1930’s and it wasn’t until the 1960’s that visitors began to realise the magnitude of the complex. Several kilometres of the intricate network of galleries have now been mapped and it’s known there are many more waiting to be found.

There are three separate tours, or itineraries, through the caves. The first and the original tour lasts for about an hour and takes you into the wide main gallery and along to the Crystal Lake with its haunting reflections. Other highlights include the 20 metre high Hall of Collapse, the flowing Pink Chimney and the Curtained Gallery.

The second tour is the longest, at 2 hours duration. It begins with a glimpse into the abyss, into which you descend via a steep staircase. At the bottom the Hall of Voices awaits, with its amazing acoustic properties. You walk alongside the mysterious underground river to the Hall of the Dome.

The third, and newest, tour lasts around 75 minutes. It begins with a descent into the depths via a complex of steps. Incredible rock formations abound, created by millennia of streams and waterfalls, many of which still flow after a period of heavy rain. A highlight is the Hall of Infinity, with its evidence for a massive ancient waterfall, and the Hall of Wonders.

It is possible to take a complete tour that encompasses all of the three separate itineraries and lasts for about 3 hours. Ask to our booking office more informations!

Once you have explored the caves our driver will meet you at the exit for go to the town of Barga which has maintained its medieval roots over the centuries, mainly because it is not yet a major tourist destination. Barga is a town of ancient traditions, dating back to the Longobard era of the early Middle Ages (6th-8th centuries) as seen by the plan of the town that has remained more or less the same since those times, with little streets running between the irregular buildings like a spider’s web.
